KN Critical Service Logistics Launches Lean Savings Program

In 2007, Kuehne + Nagel's Critical Service Logistics division launched a Lean Savings Program. Using standard lean principles, associates were trained to identify key lean inhibitors--waste, variability and inflexibility--and recommend opportunities for savings in improving existing processes, reducing material waste, consolidating reports, and ensuring that the right people were doing the right tasks. By providing staff with easy-to-use tools, they are able to perform diagnostics on tasks performed by other members of the staff, suggest opportunities for improvement, and submit to their manager for approval to implement. The Lean Program is a huge success and has realized annual savings of more than $180,000 in the first year. Associates are recognized for their lean recommendations by the presentation of the Quarterly Lean Award and in the quarterly lean results publication. The commitment of all KN CSL associates to "Think Lean" shows our commitment to our customers to provide efficient customer service and cost-saving solutions every day.

Kuehne + Nagel's Sr. Director of Critical Service Logistics Operations, Tom Fernandes, states "The key to our Lean Program is that we execute it internally and not through an outside consultant. Our people understand the concept and live by the Lean principles each and every day."
